Choice bright lustrous grouping of cubic pyrite crystals without matrix. This is in very good condition. The Bosque Draw mineral locality, situated northeast of Roswell within Chaves County, New Mexico, United States, is a distinctive regional field-collecting site celebrated for producing highly unusual, sculptural clusters of metallic, bronzy cubic pyrite. Geologically, this sedimentary environment is characterized by bedded mudstone and clay layers within Permian to Triassic age strata of the Pecos River Valley, where decaying organic matter created highly localized, reducing geochemical conditions. This concentration of biogenic hydrogen sulfide reacted with iron-rich pore waters in the soft clay matrix, stimulating the nucleated growth of microcrystalline, massive iron disulfide cores that subsequently became encrusted with sharp, interlocking cubes of highly lustrous pyrite, forming unique, snake-like or stalactitic floater aggregates that are completely free of matrix contact points. Historically, Bosque Draw has never operated as a commercial, corporate, or industrial quarry, but rather has been worked exclusively as a specialized specimen claim by independent field collectors and regional mineralogists since the late twentieth century. Hand-trenching and manual excavation of the surface clay beds peaked sporadically during the 1980s and 1990s as these distinctive, sculptural clusters entered the domestic mineral market.
