Prehnite with Chabazite

Unknown Owner
Neat and attractive translucent lustrous yellow green botryoidal crystallized prehnite on matrix with small colorless crystals of chabazite. This is in really good condition. Neat antique specimen, this comes with a previous label as shown at the end of the video. The label dates this piece to the very early 20th century if not the 19th century.Schonlautenbach, located near the famous gemstone center of Idar-Oberstein in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, is a classic locality renowned for its aesthetic prehnite specimens. Geologically, the area is characterized by Permian-aged volcanic rocks of the Nahe Basin, specifically basaltic andesites and latites. The prehnite formed as a secondary mineral within gas bubbles and fractures known as amygdales, where hydrothermal fluids circulating through the cooling volcanic pile deposited minerals such as quartz, calcite, and various zeolites alongside the prehnite. These specimens are highly prized for their translucent, light green to oil-green color and their distinctive globular or botryoidal habit, which often forms attractive hemispherical aggregates. Historically, the extraction of these minerals was closely tied to the regional quarrying of stone for industrial and construction purposes rather than dedicated mineral mining. Major specimen recovery occurred intermittently during the peak quarrying years of the 19th and early 20th centuries, as the Idar-Oberstein district solidified its reputation as a global hub for lapidary arts and mineralogical study. Although industrial activity in the specific pits has declined, Schonlautenbach remains a primary reference locality for German prehnite in historical collections.
