Fine cluster of lustrous dioptase crystals, the largest almost 2.0 cm in length. In excellent condition. Very choice thumbnail.The Kimbedi area, located in the Pool Department of the Republic of the Congo, is situated within the Neoproterozoic West Congo Belt. Geologically, the site is characterized by copper-rich hydrothermal mineralization hosted in carbonate rocks, where primary copper sulfides have undergone extensive secondary oxidation to form spectacular silicate minerals. The locality is world-famous for its exceptional dioptase specimens, which occur as large, lustrous, emerald-green rhombohedral crystals. Historically, while copper mining and quarrying in the broader Niari Valley region have been documented since the colonial era, the specific exploitation of the Kimbedi deposit for high-quality mineral specimens gained significant international attention in the mid-2000s. Unlike large-scale industrial operations, the extraction at Kimbedi is primarily conducted through artisanal methods focused on the recovery of collector-grade crystals rather than bulk ore. As of 2026, Kimbedi remains one of the premier global localities for dioptase, consistently providing some of the most vibrant and well-crystallized examples of this hydrated copper silicate to the mineral market.
