In super condition all around.Freiberg, located in the Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge) of Saxony, Germany, is one of the oldest and most significant silver mining centers in Europe, spanning over eight centuries of continuous operation. Geologically, the district is characterized by a dense network of hydrothermal polymetallic veins hosted in Proterozoic gneiss, formed during the Variscan orogeny and later enriched by multiple stages of mineralization. Acanthite, the low-temperature form of silver sulfide, is a primary ore mineral in these veins and is famous for occurring as sharp, lustrous, lead-grey cubic and octahedral crystals, often found in spectacular groups from the deeper levels of the mines. Historically, mining and quarrying began around 1168 following the discovery of silver at Christiansdorf, leading to the founding of the city and the establishment of the oldest mining academy in the world in 1765. The district reached several peaks of production during the medieval period and again in the 19th century, with major operations like the Himmelfahrt and Reiche Zeche mines defining the technological progress of the industry. Although large-scale commercial silver mining officially ceased in 1969 due to the depletion of profitable ore, the site remains an active center for underground research and mineralogical education. Today, Freiberg is a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognized for its profound influence on global mining traditions and its status as the type locality for numerous mineral species through 2026.
