Unknown Owner
Showy lustrous gemmy yellow crystals of fluorite to 1.4 cm on edge across the top of matrix. This is in good condition, a neat and attractive piece from an unusual locality for the species. The Millersville Quarry, located in Sandusky County, Ohio, is a regional industrial operation situated within the Silurian-aged carbonate bedrock of the Findlay Arch. Geologically, the quarry exploits the Lockport Dolomite, a massive dolostone formation deposited in a shallow marine reef environment approximately 425 million years ago. Historically, commercial extraction at Millersville began in the early 1900s to produce lime and crushed stone for the construction and agricultural industries. The operation has been a steady part of the local economy under the ownership of the Ohio Lime Company and more recently Gerken Materials. Active quarrying continues today, with the site primarily serving as a source of industrial aggregate while occasionally producing specimens of interest to the local mineralogical community.
