A rare, large cluster of sharp, glassy, saturated purple Amethyst crystals from the Kingston Range of California. This find was small and only accessed with difficulty, and came to market in the late 1990s. We have never seen such pieces again. Bill bought several of the largest specimens, including this one, as they are so important for California-origin Amethyst. The slender prismatic crystals up to 3.7 cm tall stand vertically across the piece showing a dark purple color from the top looking down the “c” axis. When viewed from the side, the true color is more of a translucent and lovely rich grape purple with several terminations showing multi-layered stacked “V” or chevron-shaped phantoms that are just mesmerizing. The individual well-formed crystals also exhibit nicely defined horizontal growth striations that can be seen on all sides of the prism faces. The piece does have a few broken crystals with little nicks here and there but, for the location, given the crystal quality, color, and large cabinet size, these imperfections are easily overlooked. The piece is a magnificent California Amethyst specimen that was included in the highly curated Quartz collection of Bill Larson. Ex. William (Bill) Larson Quartz Collection. This collection was built since the 1980s and on exhibit for decades in his jewelry and mineral store in Fallbrook, California.
