Trevascus mine near Gwinear (between Camborne and Hayle) in Cornwall was a short-lived copper and tin mine but is renowned for its weird and wonderful specimens of Chalcedony that were discovered underground in 1843 - the year the mine closed. Specimens take many forms, but these delicate wispy stalactites, which look like melted candle wax, are the most highly sought. This example is a really good size and stands gracefully with support. The base is hollow and displays casts after a rhombic mineral - possibly Calcite.
