Laurentthomasite is an extremely rare gem species, recently described in 2020 from a pegmatite in Madagascar where its one and only known locality is found. Despite looking similar to tourmaline in form and colour, it is in fact a potassium magnesium beryllium aluminium silicate related to Milarite. This thumbnail size individual flattened crystal displays the rich cobalt-blue colour for which this new species is known and this colour is much enhanced with backlighting. This crystal, which is extremely large for the species, is mounted on an acrylic base for display and handling.
