Tucson, Arizona, USAFree-standing, terminated acicular Epidote crystals are rare, even for what some would consider a 'rock-forming' mineral, but this small cabinet specimen from Peru is a spectacular and stunning display. Discovered in about 2015, a mountainside exposure in Canta District, Canta Province, Peru briefly produced interesting fibrous, to needle-like green Epidote crystals in sprays associated with brown bladed Axinite-(Mn) crystals, but nothing remotely of the quality of this recently extracted specimen. Essentially forming a single, fan-like spray of acicular, or needle-like pistachio-green Epidote crystals, at 6 cm in length these crystals are enormous for this rare habit, and present perfectly in a stunning dramatic fashion with a little Axinite-(Mn) and Quartz as matrix near to its base. The way light reflects upon individual 'needles' produces a play of shades of green, adding to its wonderful appearance. In superb condition for such a delicate display.
