Gem Emerald - the emerald-green variety of Beryl - is one of the hardest mineral species to obtain. Even finding a source of fractured, non-gem quality Emerald, is hard enough, but to get a richly coloured, glassy Emerald crystal, and one on matrix is especially hard. Muzo mine in Muzo Municipality, Boyacá Department, Colombia is one of the few places on Earth where such crystals are found. The mine has been operational for over a century, but very few specimens make the grade. This cabinet-sized display specimen not only features two prominent 1.9 cm long gemmy prismatic Emerald crystals, but it does so in combination with bright golden pyritohedron Pyrite crystals on a bed of crystallized Dolomite. This combination is not only unusual -white Calcite being the typical associate - but also rather attractive. Both Emerald crystals are well-formed, but lie flat, rather than upright.
