Beautiful cluster of glassy gem quartz crystals with green chlorite inclusions. Very little damage present, in good condition. The specimen comes with an antique label as shown at the end of the video with an original acquisition date of 1908.Val Bedretto, located in the Canton of Ticino, Switzerland, is a high-alpine valley renowned for its classic Alpine-fissure mineral deposits. Geologically, it lies within the Penninic nappes of the Central Alps, specifically the Gotthard and Lucomagno massifs, where intense tectonic activity during the Alpine orogeny created open cavities known as clefts. These fissures formed in metamorphic rocks like gneiss and schist, allowing silica-rich hydrothermal fluids to slowly cool and crystallize into exceptional minerals. Historically, the valley has been explored for centuries by local mineral hunters, or Strahler, with significant activity occurring throughout the 1800s and 1900s during the construction of major alpine tunnels and roads. Val Bedretto is most famous for its world-class smoky quartz and rock crystals, which often exhibit a distinctive Gwindel growth habit or appear as sharp, lustrous prismatic crystals associated with pink fluorite, hematite, and adularia. While not an industrial mining site, the valley remains one of the most productive and respected regions for high-altitude mineral collecting, with new discoveries still being made by dedicated climbers during the summer months.
