This is an excellent, two-sided cluster of the well-known, glassy, and translucent-to-gemmy Datolites from the famed Dal'negorsk District, circa 1980s-1990s. The light-green crystals have brilliant luster, and the blocky, prismatic crystals, up to 3 cm in size, have sharp, wide bevels along many of the edges. The translucent cores have a shimmer about them that is further enhanced by the gem-clear, outer portions of the crystals. Many of the faces along one side have a preferential coating of super-sparkly, drusy crystals that are thought to be Apophyllite. Their added beauty and contrast is a real bonus for the piece. The labels that came with this large small-cabinet piece indicate the location as the Sentyabr'skiy (September) Mine, from Brad van Scriver. He was one of the first exporters of these now-classic Russian minerals in the 1980s and into the 1990s. Choice and rare combination material, this piece was important enough to be part of the Liebetraus' 2012 Desautels Award-winning case (Tucson best in show). Ref: The Mineralogical Record: 32: 3-30.
