The yellow Fluorite cubes from the Hilton Mine have always been collectors' favorites among specimens from the Midlands of England, and they are rare compared to the green and purple crystals which come out of the many other mines of the region. This particular matrix specimen features a rich cluster centered on a huge, 4.2 cm cube - that is actually a sharp penetration twin with a large partner twin and a smaller crystal sticking out the middle-right. Many of the other crystals also have penetration twins, a beautiful and intriguing habit for Fluorite. One of the outstanding features of these crystals is the frosted cores crowned by totally gemmy and glassy, golden-yellow corners. While not seen in all Hilton specimens, this is typical of most larger crystals known from the location, while smaller crystals might be more translucent. The purple fluorescence is excellent, and in fact the word 'fluorescence' is derived from English Fluorites. This is a classic and uncommon specimen from the Hilton Mine, which was abandoned in 1963. This was most likely collected by people such as Lindsay Greenbank and his fellow collectors including Mick Sutcliffe in the late 1960s, and was part of Lindsay's collection before it ended up in the noted Fluorite suite of the Liebetrau collection (sold by us to Liebetrau when we obtained Lindsay's own collection). A significant specimen.
