Among England's numerous and famous Fluorite localities, the Hilton Mine in Cumbria stands out for its distinctive golden-yellow crystals which makes it nearly unique in the world; and among the rarest of the UK collectible fluorite localities. Most specimens, such as this, came out in workings by a few intrepid collectors in the orbit of Lindsay Greenbank and Mick Sutcliffe in the 1960s-1970s. Few enough turn up today, let alone cabinet-sized specimens. This was dangerous, sweaty work to access old tunnels! This fine, cabinet-sized cluster has Fluorites up to 3 cm on edge. The largest crystals are gemmy with crazed interiors that give the Fluorites a bright glimmer. Many of the smaller crystals are gemmier still, reaching water-clear glassiness inside and out. The Fluorites range from tabular to cubic, and many of the crystals have interpenetration twins, which are one of the most beautiful and aesthetic of Fluorite's habits. And of course, the crystals have an attractive and desirable lavender fluorescence, which should be expected since the term 'fluorescence' is derived from the English Fluorites. This is a fine, large, quality example for the well-known Hilton Mine. It has very trivial dings or a few contacts, acceptable given the size, and came to the Liebetraus from their friend Lindsay Greenbank I would assume. A significant UK fluorite!
