Fluorite with Celestine

Unknown Owner
An extremely aesthetic example from this locality, gemmy color zoned glassy root beer colored cubic crystals of fluorite to 2.2 cm on edge are scattered across the top of a white bladed Celestine crystal covered matrix. This is in excellent condition. One of the crystals this perched beautifully along the edge of the matrix making the overall effect very attractive. The specimen comes with a custom display base and at one time was part of the collection of Don and Gloria Olson. The White Rock Quarry, located near Clay Center in Ottawa County, Ohio, is a classic Midwestern locality situated within the Silurian-aged Lockport Dolomite. Geologically, the site is characterized by vuggy dolostone containing hydrothermal mineralization where magnesium-rich fluids created cavities lined with exceptional crystals. The quarry became legendary in the mineral collecting community approximately 10 to 15 years ago for a series of remarkable discoveries featuring superb combinations of fluorite and celestine. These specimens typically showcase translucent, brown-to-amber "honey" fluorite cubes associated with elongated, tabular, or bladed crystals of icy blue to colorless celestine. Historically, the quarry has been a significant industrial producer of crushed stone and lime products for decades, with modern operations under the management of companies like the Shelly Company. While it remains an active industrial site, the specific pockets found during the mid-2000s and early 2010s are considered some of the finest examples of these two species ever found together, solidifying White Rock as a premier North American mineral locality.
