Quartz with Calcite, Pyrite

Unknown Owner
Attractive large colorless crystals of quartz to 2.5 cm in size across the top of matrix with micro pyrite and crystallized calcite. The Cavnic mining district, located in Maramures County, Romania, is situated within the Neogene volcanic arc of the Eastern Carpathians. Geologically, it is a significant epithermal polymetallic deposit where mineralization occurs in an extensive system of steep veins cutting through volcanic rocks and underlying sediments. These veins were formed by hydrothermal fluids associated with Miocene-aged volcanic activity, resulting in rich concentrations of lead, zinc, copper, silver, and gold. Historically, mining and quarrying in Cavnic have deep roots, with documented activities dating back to the year 1336. The district underwent major industrial expansion during the 18th and 19th centuries under Austro-Hungarian rule and continued as a large-scale state-run operation throughout much of the 20th century. Most official mining activities in the Cavnic area, including the well-known Boldut and Roata sectors, were permanently closed in late 2006 as part of a national industry restructuring. As of 2026, Cavnic is recognized globally as a premier mineralogical locality, famous for its world-class specimens of rhodochrosite, quartz, and various sulfide minerals that are preserved in museums and private collections worldwide.
