Axinite-Mn with Epidote

Unknown Owner
Sharp lustrous translucent crystals of axinite measuring to 2.0 cm in size very nice across the front of a lustrous green crystallized epidote matrix. This is in good condition. The Canta Province, situated in the high Andes of the Lima Department in Peru, is a notable mineralogical region characterized by complex skarn and hydrothermal replacement deposits. Geologically, these deposits formed during the Cretaceous to Paleogene periods when magmatic intrusions interacted with carbonate-rich sedimentary sequences, resulting in a diverse suite of calcium-silicate minerals. Canta is recognized for producing well-crystallized specimens of axinite-Mn, a manganese-rich member of the axinite group that typically occurs as sharp, wedge-shaped, clove-brown to violet-brown crystals within these skarn zones. Historically, while the region has long been associated with small-scale mining and quarrying for industrial metals, more systematic extraction for mineral specimens gained momentum in the late 20th century. Industrial mining in the broader district has targeted silver, lead, and zinc for several decades, with various operations remaining active or intermittently productive through 2026. Today, Canta remains a significant locality for mineral collectors, valued for the aesthetic quality and distinct morphology of its manganese-bearing axinite crystals found in the rugged Andean terrain.
