A superb aesthetic large cabinet display piece from this prolific mining district. Crystals of galena measuring to 2.0 cm in size are scattered about a shapely quartz crystal covered matrix. In super condition. The Madan mining district, located in the Central Rhodope Mountains of southern Bulgaria, is a world-renowned lead-zinc mineral field famous for its spectacular sulfide crystal specimens. Geologically, the deposit consists of hydrothermal veins and metasomatic skarn replacement bodies hosted within Precambrian gneiss and marble. These ores formed during the Tertiary period as metal-rich fluids circulated through major fault zones and reacted with the surrounding carbonate rocks. The district is celebrated by collectors for producing high-quality galena, sphalerite, and particularly aesthetic pink manganocalcite. Historically, mining in the region dates back to Thracian and Roman times, but large-scale industrial development began in the early 1950s under the state-owned enterprise Gorubso. At its peak during the Cold War, Madan was one of the largest lead-zinc producers in Europe, supporting dozens of individual mines such as the 9th of September and Krushov Dol. While production significantly decreased after the political changes in 1989, several mines continue to operate today under private cooperatives, maintaining the area's status as a vital source of both industrial metals and world-class mineral specimens.
