Stibnite

Neat locality example for the species with gray prismatic crystals of stibnite to 8.0 cm in size forming a matrix less cluster. Some damage present as seen, still I think pretty impressive for the species and locality. These do not come available on the market often.Stibnite Hill, located in the Prospect Creek district of Sanders County, Montana, is a significant locality for antimony mineralization within the Belt Supergroup. Geologically, the deposit consists of hydrothermal quartz veins hosted in the Prichard Formation, where tectonic fracturing allowed for the deposition of stibnite, the primary ore of antimony. The stibnite here often occurs as metallic silver-gray bladed crystals and massive aggregates, sometimes associated with secondary antimony oxides like cervantite. Historically, mining activity on Stibnite Hill and the surrounding area began in the late 19th century, with the most consistent production occurring between 1900 and the late 1940s to support industrial and wartime demands. While several small mines like the Antimony Queen and the Babbitt Mine operated on the hill, work was often sporadic due to fluctuating global antimony prices. Today, Stibnite Hill is recognized by mineralogists for its well-crystallized specimens and its role as one of the few notable sources of antimony in the western United States.
