To the uninitiated eye this fine colourless to milky white Apophyllite covering peppermint green Prehnite might be from the Deccan Traps of northeast India but is in fact from the world-famous Centreville quarry in Fairfax County, Virginia, USA. This quarry was almost in the centre of the township of Centreville, surrounded by buildings and roads. The main cubic Apophyllite crystal measures 2.2 x 2.0 x 1.5 cm and sits near the middle of the display face. It has concave faces and curved edges and is glassy with a bright opalescent lustre. This is surrounded by dozens of cubic Apophyllite crystals up to about 5 mm on edge, given an attractive peppermint green tinge by the underlying Prehnite. An excellent, display-sized specimen from this classic locality, accompanied with an unprovenanced handwritten label.
