The Campbell mine was a large underground copper mine, near Bisbee, commenced in the 1920s and worked through until the 1970s reaching a depth of 4,000 ft. Accessed via a shaft, it is perhaps this one route of access which means that very few mineral specimens survive from this important mine. This very large miniature specimen shows the wonderful internal texture to the carbonate copper ore, exposed in a cut and polished surface, with swirling bands of silky, velvety green Malachite enveloped by a layer of small deep blue Azurite crystals. The natural outer surfaces of the specimen are a little rough and ready, with much bruising to the small Azurite crystals, but this is a rare old-timer and has been prepared to highlight the wonderful internal paragenesis of how these minerals came to form.
