Tucson, Arizona, USAThe La Fluorita Dulcita prospect in Cochise County, Arizona is a relatively modern discovery, comprising little more than shallow surface excavations into cavities in limestone bedrock. The most active period of workings were during 2013 and it is likely that this specimen from Paul Matt came from that time. Famous for unusual 'Ox eye' crystals and pretty bright purple octahedral crystals scattered upon contrasting white Quartz epimorphs, this lovely display specimen comes from the latter class. Forming a thin matrix, the white Quartz forms large epimorphic casts after Calcite crystals with purple Fluorite forming a later generation of small, but still very clear, purple, octahedral crystals which generally concentrate along the ridges of the Quartz epimorphs. These Fluorite crystals reach up to 8 mm across in size, but most are in the 4 to 5 mm size range, and present a fine translucency meaning that their colour is enhanced with directional lighting. A great size for display and in excellent condition, this is a really fine piece from this 'modern' discovery.
