Cerussite

Very fine sharp twinned lustrous crystal of cerussite. This is in terrific condition. The Touissit mining district, located near Oujda in the eastern Anti-Atlas region of Morocco, is world-famous for producing some of the most exceptional lead and zinc secondary minerals ever discovered. Geologically, the deposit is a Mississippi Valley-Type (MVT) system where mineralizing fluids moved through Jurassic-aged carbonates, creating rich bodies of galena that later underwent extensive oxidation. This oxidative process led to the formation of legendary cerussite crystals, which are celebrated for their incredible size, clarity, and complex twinning. The cerussite from Touissit frequently occurs as "reticulated" twins, where multiple crystals intergrow to form delicate, snowflake-like lattices, or as heart-shaped and chevron-style twins with a high adamantine luster. Historically, mining in the district began in the early 20th century and reached its peak between the 1960s and 1980s, during which time it was a premier global source for lead and specimen-grade minerals. Although large-scale industrial operations have significantly decreased, Touissit remains a hallmark locality for collectors, with its glassy, colorless to smoky cerussite twins serving as the gold standard for the species.
