Hodgkinsonite with Larsenite
Unknown Owner
Very good example for the species with crystallized pink hodgkinsonite on matrix with very sparse yellowish larsenite. Originally obtained through well-known American dealer Lazard Cahn. The specimen comes with an antique label as shown at the end of the video dating to the very early 20th century. The Franklin mining district in Sussex County, New Jersey, is globally unique for its complex zinc-iron-manganese ore body. Geologically, the deposit consists of a massive, folded lens of Precambrian-aged ore hosted within the Franklin Marble, primarily composed of the minerals franklinite, willemite, and zincite. This rare assemblage formed through the metamorphism of pre-existing metal-rich sediments roughly one billion years ago. Historically, mining began in the mid-1600s, but large-scale industrial operations flourished from the mid-1800s until the final closure of the Franklin Mine in 1954. The district is the type locality for hodgkinsonite, a rare manganese zinc silicate mineral that was first discovered there in 1913. At Franklin, hodgkinsonite typically occurs as vibrant pink to lavender-purple crystals, often found in hydrothermal veins or as small grains within the massive ore. These specimens are highly sought after by collectors because the mineral is almost entirely unique to the Franklin and nearby Sterling Hill deposits, reflecting the singular geochemical environment of this world-famous mineralogical site.
