Collected by Dan Edmonson. This is complete all around. The Stoneco Lime City Quarry, located in Wood County, Ohio, is a major industrial operation that has played a vital role in the region's aggregate industry for decades. Historically, the site became a focal point for limestone and dolomite extraction in the early to mid-20th century, supporting the rapid infrastructure development of Northwest Ohio. Geologically, the quarry excavates the Silurian-aged Lockport Dolomite, a massive and durable rock unit that formed in a shallow marine environment roughly 420 million years ago. This formation is highly valued for its physical properties, making it an excellent source for road base, concrete aggregate, and railroad ballast. Beyond its industrial utility, the Lime City Quarry is well known among geologists for its fossilized remains of ancient reef systems, including stromatoporoids and corals. It is also a noted locality for secondary mineralization, where cavities in the dolomite have yielded crystals of celestine, calcite, and fluorite. Today, the quarry remains a high-volume production site, continuing the long tradition of mineral extraction in the Lime City area.
