Discovered during the 1960s and 1970s, the large, well-formed octahedral crystals of Hematite at Dypingdal Serpentine-Magnesite Deposit were originally labelled as 'Martite' - a pseudomorph after Magnetite - but opinions have changed and these are now just called Hematite, but with a notable content of titanium. These Norwegian classics are now rarely seen available except when older collections are recycled. This lovely miniature specimen comes from David Hardman's collection (no. 13) and dates to the original discoveries. Upon it two really nicely formed octahedral Hematite crystals, both reaching 1.2 cm across, sit proud of the classic creamy-yellow Lizardite matrix, allowing their full form to be enjoyed, and another more complex but larger, 2.1 cm crystal, is clearly displayed too. A smaller, but very fine example of this iconic association from Dypingdal.
