The Ramfoss pegmatite at Kløftefoss, Modum, Viken, Norway was famous during the late 19th century, for large, well-formed crystals of black tourmaline which are now identified as the variety Schorl. Detached, individual, matrixless crystals occasionally turn up in older collections but larger, display quality crystals on matrix are much rarer. This superb cabinet sized specimen comes from the fine worldwide systematic collection assembled by the brothers Martin and Michael Günther (1951-2007 & 1956-2021) and bears a very old pale blue-rimmed number label. Upon it, the central feature is a terminated prismatic crystal of glossy black Schorl which reaches over 5 cm in length. Its termination has a slight chip on one side but stands wonderfully with its tip protruding above the pale cream to white matrix which is infused with many other small Schorl crystals at many angles. An extremely fine display specimen from this now rarely seen classic Norwegian occurrence.
