Schönfeld is famous historic locality for large Augite crystals. Despite being a rock-forming mineral, individual freestanding Augite crystals are not very common. Within the famous Eifel Volcanic Field, the Schönfelder Maar crater near Gerolstein, Vulkaneifel District, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany is a famous historic locale for Augite crystals although very few are seen nowadays in private collections. This undoubtedly very old crystal, or twinned crystal is quite considerable in size, reaching almost 5 cm in length. It does show signs of wear commensurate to its age but is a fascinating collectors item. Ex Martin and Michael Günther (1951-2007 & 1956-2021) Collection.
