Unknown Owner
Sparkling colorless crystals of fluorapophyllite across the top of matrix with white radiating crystals of pectolite. This is a good condition. The Millington Quarry, located in Somerset County, New Jersey, is a significant geological site within the Watchung Mountains. Geologically, it is situated in the Orange Mountain Basalt, a volcanic formation dating to the Early Jurassic period. The quarry is particularly noted for its mineral-rich cavities formed by volcanic gases and hydrothermal activity, yielding high-quality specimens of prehnite, various zeolites like stilbite and heulandite, and beautiful crystals of calcite. Operations at the site began in the late 1800s and continued for over a century, providing basalt trap rock for local infrastructure and road construction throughout the region. The quarry was a major industrial landmark until its primary operations ceased in the early 21st century. Today, it is recognized both for its industrial history and its status as a classic locality for East Coast mineral collectors, with some sections of the site being repurposed for environmental and community projects following the end of its commercial lifespan.
