Classic material for this Romanian locality and species.Baiut is a historical mining town located in the eastern part of the Maramures Mountains in northern Romania. Geologically, the area is situated within the Vihorlat-Gutin volcanic arc, where mineralization occurs in epithermal veins hosted by Neogene-aged andesite and dacite rocks. These hydrothermal veins are rich in base and precious metals, including gold, silver, lead, zinc, and antimony. Historically, mining at Baiut has roots dating back to the medieval period, with significant industrial expansion occurring during the 18th and 19th centuries under the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The mines remained active through the 20th century, particularly during the communist era, before final closure in the mid-2000s.
