Columbite
Unknown Owner
A thick almost blocky black semi lustrous crystal of columbite with attached matrix. Nice example for the species. The specimen comes with a previous data card dating this to 1960.Ambatofotsikely, located in the Betafo District of the Vakinankaratra Region in central Madagascar, is a historic locality famous for its large and well-formed crystals of the columbite group. Geologically, the deposit is a complex granitic pegmatite belonging to the Sahatany Valley pegmatite field, which is noted for its enrichment in rare elements like tantalum, niobium, lithium, and beryllium. The columbite crystals formed during the late-stage crystallization of granitic melt, often occurring as sharp, tabular, black metallic crystals embedded in a matrix of quartz or feldspar. Historically, mining in this region reached its peak during the French colonial era in the early to mid-20th century, specifically between the 1920s and 1950s, when Madagascar was a significant global source for rare-metal ores and museum-quality mineral specimens. While small-scale artisanal mining by local prospectors continues to this day, the most iconic, large-scale specimens found in major collections were recovered during the primary industrial period of the mid-1900s.
