Iron METEORITE Octahedrite Ni-Fe Meteorite
Gibeon is world-famous, not only to meteorite collectors but to much of the public too, on account of its magical criss-cross pattern, known as the Widmanstätten structure seen when these Ni-Fe meteorites are cut, polished and prepared with acid etching. Highly collectible, many of the larger masses have been sliced up smaller and smaller to make jewellery and other ornamental things, meaning that larger display specimens are becoming increasingly hard to source. Even rarer, are completely uncut larger specimens. At 798 g, and complete all-round, this is a rare surviving uncut Gibeon meteorite for someone who treasures natural form, over prepared specimens. With its classic rounded, pitted surface texture caused during its entry into the Earth's atmosphere, and subsequent natural surface tarnish from being out in the desert, this has all of the hallmarks of a great original Gibeon meteorite. Dense, and tactile too, this would make a superb handling specimen for teaching or demonstration. At 3.6 Billion years old this would certainly be the oldest specimen in your collection! Ex Hettrich Collection.
