Wodginite is a manganese-tin-tantalate and is one of the more bizarre and unusual tantalates, with sharp and generally elongated crystals as well. From any location, they are very rare in any case - and the more so, on matrix! This happens to be an excellent, doubly terminated crystal on matrix from Linópolis, Brazil. This very well-formed, lustrous and black-brown crystal measures 3.6 cm in length and has well-developed prism faces and wedge-shaped terminations. It sits nicely on a three-dimensional, triangular-shaped piece of matrix covered in scintillating, 2 to 4 mm quartz crystals that are more slender on the front and larger on the back. The wodginite crystal sits upright and at a slight angle on the matrix for perfect balance and displayability. It is a gorgeous display specimen of this species! It could easily be mistaken for a ferberite crystal. There is a 1.1 cm sidecar crystal adjacent to it and then there is a short, stout, mostly complete, 1 cm wodginite on the back at the bottom of the piece. This is one of the more significant Brazilian minerals in terms of species representation and it also comes with Paul Stahl's label from when it was displayed at the Munich Show in one of his very well reviewed exhibitions of rare species matched to show themes (in this case, the year of native elements).
