Unknown Owner
Brilliant sparkling deep blue crystals of azurite in groupings to 0.4 cm in size across the top of a matrix mostly coated with light green crystallized smithsonite. This is in really good condition. The piece has been repaired, the repair done very well and not obvious. The specimen comes with a series of previous labels, the specimen at one time part of the famous smithsonite suite of Dawn and James Minette. This piece was on display at the 2002 East Coast Gem and Mineral Show as well. The Waldo Graphic Mine, located in Socorro County, New Mexico, is part of the Magdalena mining district, an area with a long history of silver, lead, and zinc production. Mining activity in the district began in the late 19th century, with the Waldo and Graphic properties later consolidated and developed as a single operation. The mine worked polymetallic vein deposits hosted in limestone and related rocks, with underground workings following mineralized zones at depth. During its most active periods in the late 1800s and early 1900s, the mine contributed to the regional output of silver and base metals, supporting the growth of nearby communities such as Magdalena. This specimen was on public display at the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show, 2026.
