Covellite
Unknown Owner
Thin bladed attractive iridescent bluish purple crystals of covellite across the top of matrix. This is in really good condition for one of these Colorado classics.Summitville in Rio Grande County, Colorado, is a historic gold mining district that was developed in the late 1800s and worked through underground methods and later open pit operations. The deposit consists of high sulfidation epithermal mineralization hosted in volcanic rocks. Mining continued intermittently into the late 20th century. In the sulfide zones of the deposit, covellite occurs as deep blue metallic coatings and masses, often formed by the alteration of other copper sulfide minerals.
