An open cavity showing crystals of lustrous emerald green slightly translucent dioptase to 1.5 cm in size, the cavity mostly coated by sparkling colorless crystallized quartz. In good condition.The Tantara Mine is located in the Haut-Katanga Province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, situated within the prolific Central African Copperbelt. Geologically, the site is a copper-cobalt deposit hosted in the Neoproterozoic sedimentary rocks of the Katanga Supergroup, specifically within the Mine Series dolomites and shales. The mine is famous for its unique karst-like pocket systems where hydrothermal fluids rich in silica and copper interacted with the carbonate host rock. Tantara is world-renowned for producing what many consider the finest dioptase specimens ever discovered. These crystals are celebrated for their intense emerald-green color, high transparency, and exceptional luster. Unlike many other localities, the dioptase from Tantara often occurs as sharp, rhombohedral crystals on a contrasting white quartz or pinkish-white dolomite matrix, sometimes associated with blue plancheite or shattuckite. While the mine has seen periods of both industrial and artisanal activity over the last century, it remains a legendary locality for collectors due to the aesthetic perfection and size of its deep green silicate crystals.
