Fine historical barite specimen from Greece. Tabular crystals measuring to 2.0 cm in size are scattered across the top of matrix. Some damage present as seen. The specimen comes with an antique label as shown at the end of the video and dates to the very early 20th century.Megalo Livadi on Serifos Island in the South Aegean, Greece, is a classic mining area developed in a region of metamorphic rocks that include schist and marble. The geology is characterized by hydrothermal mineralization that formed iron rich deposits, particularly hematite, within these host rocks. The area was extensively mined in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with ore transported from coastal loading facilities. The deposits also produced a variety of mineral specimens from oxidized zones and cavities. Megalo Livadi is well known for its combination of metamorphic geology, hydrothermal mineralization, and historic mining activity.
