Sphalerite with Quartz

Unknown Owner
Sharp crystals of sphalerite measuring to 1.5 cm in size across the top of a sparkling crystallized white quartz matrix. Slight micro-damage present, this still in good condition. The specimen comes with an antique label as shown at the end of the video and dates to the very early 20th century if not earlier.Schemnitz, now known as Banska Stiavnica in Slovakia, is one of the most historically important mining districts in Europe, with activity dating back to at least the medieval period and possibly earlier. The region is characterized by complex hydrothermal vein deposits associated with volcanic rocks, where mineralizing fluids introduced gold, silver, and a wide range of base metals into fractures and breccia zones. During its peak in the 17th and 18th centuries, Schemnitz was a major center of precious metal production and also became a leading center for mining technology and education, including the establishment of one of the worlds first mining academies. Extensive underground workings, drainage systems, and water management features were developed to support mining at depth. The district remains well known for its rich mineralization and its significant role in the history of European mining and geology.
