The Wutong Mine is famous for distinctive rhodochrosites in which the crystals are modified and flattened to the point of nearly being disc-shaped as you see here. The rhodos in this dense cluster range up to 3 cm. The crystal interiors are glassy with a medium-pink color, while the faces are a slightly lighter shade and literally sparkle like pink frost. Associated are several modified, stepped cubes of gemmy and lustrous fluorites, up to 2.4 cm, and each one reacts to UV light with a vivid purple fluorescence. The fluorite is gorgeous - super sparkling and lustrous, gemmy, and with a pleasing strong pastel lavender color that is hard to convey in photos for some reason. As described, this is already a very fine specimen for the locality, but the entirety of the rhodochrosite and fluorite actually fill a fissure within the country rock, so we see an actual full “pocket” of crystals as it was found in nature! That is amazing, and something almost never seen for rhodochrosite in our experience. The fissure is 10 cm x 5 cm, and its inner surface is completely covered by 1-2 mm gemmy quartz points. These serve as a base for the rhodos, and at the same time provide a dazzling contrast. A nice structural and visual bonus is that the seam extends completely through the matrix and actually opens up partially along the reverse side. This is a wonderful touch that adds even more to the splendid aesthetic that this unique "pocket piece" specimen has. The Wutong Mine was long producing little, and this is from recent but small workings there (mined in 2025).
