This stunning Beryl var. Aquamarine from Barra de Salinas, Coronel Murta, Minas Gerais, Brazil demonstrates what happens when gem quality and crystallographic complexity combine. The result, is something exceptionally beautiful. Hexagonal in cross-section, the transparent Aquamarine crystal has a small flat pinacoid face at its termination but with glorious truncated sides as pyramidal faces. These faces are in extremely fine condition with microscopic wear on their edges. Small black needles of tourmaline (probably the species Schorl) occur as inclusions in a second, fragmentary Aquamarine crystal at the base of the main crystal and small 'books' of golden Muscovite mica sit on the smaller Beryl too. Both Beryl crystals rest against a larger crystal of glossy white feldspar. The pegmatites at Barra de Salinas are better known for their colourful Elbaite tourmaline crystals, but judging by this magnificent miniature specimen the Aquamarine is worth looking out for too. An absolutely top quality miniature Brazilian Aquamarine.
