Colorless sparkling curving crystal grouping of gypsum, this material often referred to as rams horn gypsum or selenite. In good condition all around. The Southwest Mine, located in Bisbee, Arizona, was part of the larger Bisbee mining district, one of the most productive copper regions in the United States. Mining in the district began in the late 19th century, with the Southwest Mine contributing to the extraction of copper rich ores along with lead, zinc, and silver. The deposit formed as a replacement body within limestone host rock, enriched by hydrothermal solutions that introduced a wide variety of minerals. The mine became well known not only for its ore production but also for its exceptional mineral specimens, including azurite, malachite, and a wide range of rare secondary minerals formed in the oxidized zones. Although large scale mining in Bisbee declined in the 20th century, the Southwest Mine remains an important part of the district's mineralogical legacy.Rams horn gypsum is a distinctive variety of gypsum characterized by its curved, twisted crystal form that resembles the horns of a ram. These unusual shapes form as gypsum crystals grow in environments where space is restricted or where growth conditions change during formation, causing the crystals to bend and twist rather than develop as straight prisms. This can occur in evaporite deposits or in cavities where mineral rich solutions allow for slow crystallization. Impurities, variations in temperature, and changes in solution chemistry can all influence the curvature of the crystals.
