Attractive combination piece with lustrous deep blue crystals of azurite measuring to 1.5 cm in size across the top of a malachite crystal matrix. Some damage present, overall though still very nice.The Tsumeb Mine in Namibia is world renowned for producing some of the finest azurite specimens ever discovered. Mining began in the early 1900s and targeted a rich, pipe like polymetallic ore body containing copper, lead, and zinc minerals. Azurite, a deep blue copper carbonate mineral, formed in the oxidized zones of the deposit where copper bearing solutions reacted with carbonate rich environments. At Tsumeb, azurite commonly occurs as sharp, lustrous crystals, including prismatic and tabular forms, as well as in radiating clusters and complex aggregates. Many specimens are associated with malachite, often forming striking color contrasts between the blue azurite and green malachite. The exceptional quality of Tsumeb azurite is attributed to the unique geochemical conditions and slow crystal growth within the deposit. Although mining operations ceased in the 1990s, azurite specimens from Tsumeb remain highly valued by collectors and museums worldwide.
