Lustrous striated golden crystals of pyrite to 2.0 cm on edge across the front of a massive pyrite matrix. In good condition. The Stratoni Mine, located in northern Greece within the Kassandra mining district, is an important producer of lead, zinc, and silver from stratiform and vein type deposits. Mining activity in the area dates back to ancient times, but modern operations at Stratoni began in the 20th century with the development of underground workings to exploit sulfide rich ore bodies. The mine primarily extracts galena and sphalerite, with silver as a significant byproduct, and has been operated by several companies over the years using updated mining and processing techniques. In addition to its economic importance, Stratoni is also known among mineral collectors for producing well crystallized specimens of sulfide minerals and associated species. The combination of long mining history and continued modern production makes the Stratoni Mine a key part of Greece's mining industry.
