Mining in the area focused on cassiterite bearing hydrothermal veins that cut through granitic and metamorphic rocks. The district is also known among mineral collectors for producing a variety of well crystallized mineral specimens. Fluorapatite occurs here as green to brown prismatic crystals associated with quartz, fluorite, and other vein minerals. Specimens from Ehrenfriedersdorf are valued for their sharp crystal form and classic association with minerals from the Ore Mountains region.
