The “Steamboat” tourmaline, 28 cm (including the large, horizontal quartz crystals not shown) on which the tourmalines are perched, from the Tourmaline King mine, collected there by Frank Barlow Schuyler in 1907. It was purchased by Washington A. Roebling (1837–1926) and later donated by his son John A. Roebling II to the Smithsonian Institution, where it is now one of the museum’s iconic specimens on display in the Gem Hall of the U.S. National Museum of Natural History. Photo by Dane Penland.
