The deposit consists of Mississippi Valley type mineralization in limestone, producing zinc, lead, and associated minerals. The mine is especially famous among mineral collectors for producing high quality specimens such as sphalerite, fluorite, calcite, and barite. Many specimens from Elmwood are noted for their large size, bright color, and excellent crystal form, making the locality one of the most important modern sources of fine mineral specimens in the United States.
