A sharp, large, indigo-blue sapphirine crystal from Ft. Dauphin, Madagascar (from finds circa 2020). This is a substantial and superb matrix example of this rare magnesium-aluminum silicate that measures 4.5 cm tall by 4.7 cm across and 1 cm thick! It has good luster and sits perfectly displayed on the biotite-anorthite feldspar schist matrix. It's pseudohexagonal, but is actually monoclinic. One of the absolute coolest things about this piece is the off-white feldspar metamorphic "reaction rim" or halo around the sapphirine that is thought to protect the sapphirine crystal during its growth in its high temperature and pressure metamorphic environment! This reaction rim and it being embedded in matrix is a great attribute to this attractive piece. Sapphirine is named for the blue color allusion and shape of sapphire. Exceptional for the species and locale. Paul had among first choice of this material when they were premiered at the Munich Show by Laurent Thomas, who had the entire discovery. This piece, superbly balanced, as judged by him to be among best in size class. It has unusually sharp edges, unusually wide depth, unusually good luster, and superb positioning. Widely regarded as the best of species find, historically.
