A very rich, important, small cabinet specimen of braunite from the Långban Mine in Sweden and consisting of large, lustrous, black, submetallic braunite crystals to 2.4 cm across. Braunite is a manganese silicate and often constitutes manganese ore at many localities like Långban and the Kalahari Manganese Field in South Africa. Crystals on this piece range between 3 mm to 2.4 cm with the smaller crystals being very well formed and the larger ones being a little more crude to incomplete. A very fine-grained micaceous mineral fills the deep interstices between the crystals along with minor, 2 to 4 mm flakes of coppery colored phlogopite. The matrix is granular massive braunite ore. An excellent crystalline piece for the species. This was in the "Hoppel" collection, before passing to Mark Mauthner, and later to Paul Stahl. Sadly, much of the original documentation was lost on Hoppel minerals when they went to auction in 2013, but this is very likely an old specimen.
