Green Monster Mountain on Prince of Wales Island in southeastern Alaska is a well known mineral locality associated with copper mineralization in skarn deposits formed where intrusive rocks contacted limestone. Exploration and small scale mining took place in the early 20th century, focusing on copper minerals such as chalcopyrite and bornite within altered host rocks. The locality later became famous among mineral collectors for large and well formed dark green epidote crystals found in pockets within the skarn zones. Although the site was never a major commercial mine, Green Monster Mountain is recognized internationally as one of the classic localities for high quality epidote specimens.
