Rhodochrosite with Pyrite

Unknown Owner
Attractive pink lustrous rhombohedral crystals of rhodochrosite measuring to 2.5 cm in size covering the front side of matrix with micro pyrite. This is in good condition with very minimal micro-damage present. A choice north American classic. The Emma Mine in Butte, Montana was part of the extensive Butte mining district, one of the most productive copper mining regions in the United States. Developed in the late 19th century, the mine exploited rich polymetallic hydrothermal veins hosted in granitic and volcanic rocks that contained copper minerals along with silver, gold, and other metals. Operations were carried out by underground methods and were connected to the larger network of shafts and tunnels that characterized mining in Butte. Although individual mines such as the Emma eventually closed as operations consolidated, they contributed significantly to the districts reputation as the Richest Hill on Earth.
